COROMANDEL RACES. [bt TET.EGKAPII. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Coromandel, Wednesday. Owing nc doubt tc the heavy rain during the day tho attendance at tho Coromandel races was not very large. The various events, however, were well contested, with the exception of the Hauraki Handicap; an impression prevailed that Nightingale should have won. An inquiry, however, was held, and exonerated the rider, the owner stating that he had every confidence in the jockey, and that he and the jockey had a number of tickets on the mare. No action was therefore taken by the. stewards. The result was that a rank outsider, Kempt, an aged gelding by Howitzer from a Billingsgate mare, won at the post. There were only two tickets on the winner, which yielded a dividend of £40 ss. These were both held by the owner, Mr. Hodge, a Mercury Bay settler. As the tickets were 10s each Mr. Hodge's £1 gave a return of £80 10s. Mr. J. M. Lang gave universal satisfaction as judge, and Mr. J.
