TO HIS ANGEL.
BECAUSE mv love hath not a thousand eyes, Poor helpless love, and is not fleet enough To follow this sweet Mischief as lie flies, And tfuard him by the dangerous ways and rough— Because by day and night I go in fear, Keep him "and save him for me. Angel dear. lie will not hold my hand but runs alone, He will not heed me though I cry and call; But he will come to you, O shining one. In your clear palm will thrust his lingers small, , And let you carry him and cling so close Unto your milky neck, your check of rose. There arc- so many dangers lie in wait. So many pitfalls for the eager feet— The hooves, the wheels outside the open gate, The broken glass, the river deep and fleet, The poisonous berries in the smiling hedge, And the sheer precipice at the green wood's edge; Sickness and plagues, the stairs, the window's height. , Whence he may fall, the furious fires and hot. Dear Angel, little children die to-night Because their Angels wandered or forgot. But you, who know the guardian love and fear, Forget not, oh, forget not, Angel dear! K. H.
