STEAMER FREW TO THE NORTH.

Otiß Kaitaia correspondent writes:On November 12 Mr. Ranson, manager of the Northern Steamship Company, addressed a meeting of the Farmers' Union here. He said that owing to the increased price of coal, provisions, wages, etc., the company would not continue the present low scale for freight, namely, 10s per ton, between Auckland and Awanui, much longer, and that it would probably soon be raised to £1 per ton. He urged the settlors to try and work up a good export trade. Ho wished to know th: views of the meeting re a proposal to run the Glenelg to Hohoura with a tender to Awanui, instead of the present direct boat between Awanui and Auckland. The meeting decided in favour of the existing arrangements, and was very much against any transhipping proposals. A vote of thanks was given Mr. Ranson for his address. Several other matters were discussed. One gentleman offered to help the settlers to find the capital to run a boat of their own, but it was generally considered that with the present direct boat and low freights there was no cause for a new service.
