WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN" CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Tuesday. PENSIONERS AND REFUGEES. A scene took place to-day at the meeting of the Benevolent Trustees, which points a moral, if it adorns no tale. Mr. Bayliss, one of the trustees, complained of the trustees lacking attention to their duties. He had advocated the scheme of a casual ward, connected with the Ohiro Home. He objected to the trustees filling the Home with old age pensioners, to the detriment of the indigent poor. There were no less than 28 pensioners in the Home occupying quarters to the detriment of "the indigent. He was sick and tired of the whole thing. After some discussion Mr. Bayliss resigned, and left the room. MAORI SCHOOLS. Mr. Bird, headmaster of the Karori school, has beer appointed organising superintendent of the Maori schools throughout the colony. WELLINGTON CLIMATE. The following gives a notion of the weather here for the last month : —18 days of northwesterly gales, 11 days of southerly "busters," and 32 high northerly winds. Rain fell on 13 days. COLONIAL BILLS OF LADING. From the Devonport (Tasmania) Chamber of Commerce th<? Wellington Chamber of Commerce lately received s request that some united action should be taken to induce the shipping companies to alter the form of the bills of lading used in these colonies. The Wellington Council sympathised with the Tasmanian Chamber, but did not believe that any effort of the kind would be successful. PROBATE. The Government has decided to waive all claims to probate duty in the estate of New Zealanders who have died on active service in South Africa. A STRANGE STORY. A singular case of error is disclosed in the cast of the reported death of Trooper Percy Crabbe, of Wellington, in South Africa. Last night the news arrived that the person deceased was a relative of the same name serving in an Australian contingent. In the case of the " reported" death, the trooper's family had gone into mourning, and a sister was prostrated by the erroneous announcement of her brother death.
