The new mail steamer Sierra left Philadelphia for San Francisco on October 11, The trial trip of the steamer, which took place at Philadelphia, was reported as very satisfactory, a speed of about 18 knots being attained. The officers who will bring the Hie)rra out are aR old employees of the Oceanic Steamship Company. Captain Henry C. naudlette was formerly commander of the Mariposa: Chief Engineer W. H. Nelman was formerly of the Australia; Purser N. C. Walton, .fun., was formerly of the Marinosa: Dr. Millau Soule was formerly of the Australia; and Chief Steward William N. Hannigan was on the Mariposa. The dimensions and a general description of the new steamer have already been published.
