HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The adjourned meeting of the above was held on Friday. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. G. Edgecumbe), and Messrs Tippin, Dyer, Bond, Manning, Salmon, Young, Davey, and Slade.

A letter was received from. Mr. Lang, M.H.R., enclosing one from the Minister fot Hallways, to the effect that instructions had been given to erect a verandah at the Hamilton railway station. Mr. W. Duncan, supervising valuer, informed the Council that a copy of the valuation list of the borough would be supplied at one-tnird the cost to Government. The clerk reported that he had communicated with Mr. Duncan, who had wired: " Total ratable unimproved value, £43,646." This excludes unoccupied Council, Crown, and Domain properties. The Burgesses' Association wrote that in their opinion, instead of. abolishing yard fees, the auctioneers be charged a sum sufficient to pay interest on the capital invested. The association also called attention to the increase in cost of printing and advertising during the year 1899-1900, notwithstanding that the Mayor had offered to do the work gratis. The clerk said the letter had only been received at the commencement of the meeting, and he could not explain without referring to records. The clerk was requested to supply the information asked, for. Mr. John Murphy, of Tamahere, wrote offering to provide a scheme of water supply for the borough at a cost of £10,000. He purposed to utilise the Tamahere Creek and ■supply the borough by gravitation. It was decided to refer the matter to a committee. Ihe matter of forming the footpath i* Hood-street, raised by Mr. Hatrick, .'as referred to the Works Committee. The Council decided not'to undertake £ or £ A", Beale -street, as requested by Mr. i\. I. Gilmom. The clerk reported that the overdraft, after the accounts to date were passed for payment, would amount to £789 0s sd. The Legal and Finance Committee recommended m their report that the service of Mr. L. ONeil be retained as a solicitoi to the borough. Mr. T. Burch, Government road surveyor, reported on the Hamilton traffic bridge at some length. The conclusion he arrived at was that it would be more economical to build a new bridge of iron, after the stylo of the Mangaroa bridge. He is ot opinion that this could be done for about £3000, and that it would cost more to repair the present structure. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee, with a view of preparing some scheme to"be submitted to other public bodies interested.
