Alix beat Nancy Hanks for the world's trotting record in September, 1894, and the time then made, 2m. 3|s., stood as the fastest trotting mile the world has ever seen until September 25 this year, when Mr. C. J. Hamlin's seven-year-old gelding Tho Abbott, by Chimes (son of Electioneer) »ut of Nettie King (by Mambrino King) made a successful attack on the record, beating it by half-a-second. An attempt to lower the record was made by The Abbot on September 12, but he scored no better than 2m. 4s. He did a slow quarter of a mile to begin with, and that spoiled him. His second try, on the 25th, resulted in his taking the crown from Alix. Geers drove the geld ing, and the trial took place on tho_ Terro Haute track, the official timing by quarters being 31is., lm. 2is. ; lm. 3135., 2m. 3is. The pacemakers wore driven by John Diekerson and Charles Lyons. The record of Alix was lowered half-a-second. Extra pains were taken to have the time accurate. Mr. C. J. Hamlin witnessed the performance, and tho realisation of his life-long ambition brought a keen flush of pleasure to his face. We recall the joy of Mr. Hamlin, remarks a. New York paper, when his mare 80110 Haml'n trotted at Rochester in August, 1889, to a record of 2m. 12Js. This was faster than the record of Ranis, for which Mr. Bonner had naid 36.000 dollars, and it gratified pride of ownership. Later Mr. Hamlin got into th? select 2m. 10s list with Nightingale, Fan tasy, The Monk, Dare Devil, and Battleton, but some other breeder was always in ad vance of him, and he had to sit upon tho steps of the throne instead of upon the throne itself. It is extremely gratifying to his old friends to see him gathering in the sweets of victory while ho still has th>health to enjoy'them. The Abbot is a bay gelding, .<■ shade under 15.2 hands, foaled July 20, 1893, and by Chimes out of Nettie King (four-year record, 2m. 20,15.), by Mam brino King; second dam. Netty Murphy, by Hamlin'Patchon (son of George M. Patchen. 2m. 2oAs.). and third dam by a son of Kenstallion Bertrand. Mambrino King was a very handsome and stout horse, by Mambrnui D atchen (brother of Lady Thorne. 2m. 18is.), out of Belle Thornton, by Edwin Forrest ison of Young Bav Kentucky Hunter); second dum Brown Kitty, by Birmingham (son jf Stockholder, the son of Sir Archy), an l third dam a daughter of the old-time thoroughbred stallion Bertrand, Mambrino Patchen was by Mambrino Chiof out of the Hodes "iare, by Gano, the son of American Eclipse. Clay, jun.
