PROPOSED SPORTS AT KAWHIA.

A Weil-attended meeting of the Kawliia Regatta and Sports Committee was held in Mr. Langley's goodshed on November 13. A very good programme has been drawn up, including several £20 prizes, and several £12 ones. It has been decided to make this carnival as attractive as possible, and as this is the chief settlement in the King Country all possible native amusements and competitions are to be introduced, so that the outside public maj be drawn to see the Maori in his own home, -It is not quite decided when the days are to be, but it will most probably bo arranged for the last days in the first week of the new year. The first day will be the regatta, the following the it'hletie sports, and the third a steamer excursion to Gannet Island, to fish for hapuka. This island has been leased by Mr. G. H. Buckeridge. Those who do not care to go so far afield are to have the option of a picnic at Rakaunui, one of the loveliest spots in New Zealand, find noted for its oyster beds, and grapes in season, or they may go to Awaroa, where there are some caves containing Maori mummies. If possible an'excursion to the Piripiri Caves will be made. These caves are far away ahead of the Waitomo Caves, and when the roads are opened up will be one of the sights of New Zealand.[Own Correspondent.]
