THE PUBLICATION OF TEE YEAR. WHAT IT CONTAINS. The contents'of this year's superb Christmas Number of the Auckland Weekly News are so many and varied that we have not space to enumerate them all, but the following are some of the chief features : — The Defence of New Zealand Hill. — A magnificent presentation plate in 13 colours, depicting the New Zealanders and Yorks driving the Boers off the hill which they had cleverly attempted to capture. The picture was painted specially for the number by Mr. C. P. Goldie, from a reliable sketch furnished by our special war correspondent, and it will be found to be most accurate in all its details. It was for this deed that Lord Roberts eulogised our mep in his despatches, and the place was named New Zealand Hill in fitting recognition. The Volcanic Wonderland of New Zealand. — most interesting illustrated account of the past and present of the Hot Lakes region, including views of the lost terraces, scenes after the Tarawera eruption, and magnificent pictures of the present features of the district. - New Zealand National Park.— are given of the celebrated burning mounttains, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe, and an excellent picture of the hot crater lake on the summit of Ruapehu. The Wangantji River.—A handsome full-page sheet of views illustrating the beauties of the New Zealand Rhine. A Maori Tangi.Eight pictures, showing what a Maori tangi really is, accompanied by an interesting description. Studies of New Zealand Pastoral Life. Six most artistic pictures by Mr. Reid, of Wishaw, Scotland, who is unquestionably the best animal photographer in Great Britain. The Building of the First Ship in New Zealand.—A handsome full-page picture, by Mr. Kennet Watkins, illustrating a romantic incident at Dusky Sound, as far back as 1793. The Urewera Country. — splendidlyillustrated article describing the features of a beautiful and romantic region that is as yet almost unknown to Europeans in this country. Children's Pages. Handsome New Zealand pictures, and interesting stories for the young. The Waikato River.Handsome fullpage series of views of this majestic river. New Zealand Christmas Scenes. — A series of pictures illustrating camping out, excursionists departing, fishing, and other scenes typical of our holiday season. An Incident of the Maori War. — stirring full-page picture, showing how Sergeant Austin won his New Zealand Cross at Putahi, Taranaki, in 1866. Altogether this Christmas Number is the best, brightest, and most characteristic number ever issued in the colony. The sale already has exceeded by several thousand copies that of last year's issue, and those who wish to avoid disappointment should place their orders early.
