A claim on the Rough Riders' Contingent fund has been received from Wellington, which is likely to absorb the greater portion of the balance of tho fund now in the hands of the treasurers. Tho following telegram, received from the Under-Secretary of Defence, explains tho position:—"Ro your section Fourth Contingent I find on adjustment of stores account that tho sum of £808 Is 9d is due from Auckland. Please pay that amount into the public account, Bank of New Zealand, and post the bank receipt to this office." Tho lion, treasurers (Messrs. Myers and (lorrie) telegraphed for particulars, which have been forwarded, showing that the £888 was for carbines, sword bayonets, pouches, riflo buckles, saddlery., khaki, etc. Mr. Leo, Myers, who is acting in the absenco of Mr. A. M. Myers, informed us yesterday that tho balance at present stands at nearly £1100, so that if the account just received has to bo paid there will romain in hand about £500. I At a meeting of subscribers to the patriotic fund held to decide what should be done with the balance of the fund, it was explained that £300 had been subscribed for the Transvaal refugees' fund. This it was decided to remit to Sir Alfred Milner. Of the remainder, £600 had already been sent to the Lord Mayor of London. After paying expenses, etc., there was a balance of £3830. It was decided to hold £3500 for the relief of any wounded or invalided men from Otago and Southland and tho relief of those dependent on them.
