FIRES.
[BY TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION.] Woodvillk, Monday. Two deliberate attempts were made to burn down the English parsonage on Friday evening. The building was fired in two places, but on each occasion the outbreak was discovered. The police are investigating, but so far have no clue to the perpetrator of the outrage.
Du.vedin, Monday. A fire at Balclutha yesterday morning completely destroyed a block of wooden buildings in the centre of the town, comprising the premises occupied by McLeod (draper), Fruish (tobacconist), and the old Criterion Hotel. The fire originated in McLeod's. Finish's and McLeod's shops were owned by Mr. Hallenstein, and the hotel by Mrs. Mclntyre, of Miller's Flat. The insurances on Hallenstein's property are unknown. The old hotel is insured in the Royal for £300. John McDonnell, the lessee, saved the bulk of his furniture. He estimates his loss at £80 (uninsured). McLeod's stock was insured in the Phoenix for £500, but Fruish's stock, valued at £300, was uninsured.
