The new Tyeer steamer Mimiro, now on the voyage from New York to Australia, and New Zealand, is of the following dimensions: Length, 440 ft; breadth, 55ft; depth, 33ft 2m; gross register tonnage, 6225. She is of the highest class that can be accorded to any steamer by British Lloyd's, and is built entirely of steel, has three decks and five large hatches, to each of which sho has two very powerful winches, making a total of ten winches. She is also fitted with double derricks to each hatch, and has, in addition, a third derrick at No. 2 hatch capable of lifting weights up to 15 tons. Her dead weight capacity is about 9500 tons, including bunkers, and her cubical capacity, is about 545,280 ft, or, say, 13,632 tons measurement. Tins, however, has been slightly decreased by insulation, whi''.i has been instituted in Nos. 1, 2, and 1 hob i and main 'tween decks (lower tween decks). These six compartments are all very carefully sheathed, and between the sheathing and the sides of the ship there is a, complete system of piping, through, which brine is forced for the purpose of lowering the temperature of the compartments to any defied decree. She has a capacity for the stowage and freezing of 100,000 carcases of sheep; her refrigerating machinery is of the most modern type, and is what is known as the carbonic and hydroid system. In her boiler room she has four large tubular boilers, and under ordinary conditions, when fully laden, she can make a speed of 12 knots, and when light, that is, when she has only the necessary coal for the voyage and her water ballast tanks in double bottom filled, she can make a speed of 135 knots. She is expected to make the run to Melbourne, her first port of discharge in Australia, in 4s days or less. Her daily consumption is 45 tons, which, for a vessel of her size, is considered to be very economical. In addition to the ordinary cargo compartments, of which she has 14, she has three small spaces forward and two aft, known respectively as the fore and after peaks, with cargo capacity of over 400 tons. This is more space than a great many schooners ulying along the English coast have all told.
