_ The weather is wretched, and casual water is all over the links. Notable amongst the entrants arc Hugh McNeill (tho Sydney champion), 0. E. S. Gillies (the champion of Australia) and Arthur Duncan (tho present Aew Zealand champion).

The competition under bogey rules, for tho trophy prated by Dr. Stuart B. Raid, was Played at Green Lano on Saturday. Tho inks were somewhat heavy after the recent heavy mS) but, taking everything into consideration, were in excellent order. LACROSSE. THE OPENING OF THE SEASON. Prtte' n°° peol,l ° ass «mbl C d at the Domain 2™« h ro, " ul - on ? ;,turda >- "ftomoon to witness the opening iacrosso tournament of the season. The tournament took the form O a series of games between learns of eight Players from each of tho district clubs lately established lay started at three o'clock, when the Pamell team mot Suburbs and were defeated by one goal to nil. Among the winners Rendoll, Mornn, and Horrold were pro3 c ,?-°^ff* ed ,, wit I h good judgment, Si i fed m m " home" player most unselnslily lho small seoro of the winners was mainly due to the splendid defensive play of Ward and Ohnllis, point and left defence respectively. With Goldsbro at goal, Parnell had the right man in the right placo; his performance was most creditable for a novice -n i m 110 , leams ,0 111 - v wore Grey Lynn and Nor 1. Shore. Grey Lynn, being assisted by Ward, of Parnoll. North Slioro played a strong attack game, and no doubt would have scored had it not been for Ward relieving the pressure on Groy Lynn's territory. Towards the end of tho game Bradley broke through Shore backs and scored. Shore was thus defeated by one goal to nil. Ponsonby and Grafton mado tho third match, and the gamo was fast and interesting throughout. Tho teams were each strong, and were well matched. Grafton's dofonco fought stubbornly, paying great attention to R. ftoton, Ponsonby's" homo" player, who only onco managed to get tho ball between tho posts, while Hill and Atkinson each put one goal to Grafton's credit. The black and whites were thus victors by ono point. The results of these throe matches left Suburbs, Grey Lynn, and Grafton to fight for tho honours of the day. Grafton drew a bye, so Suburbs tried conclusions with Grey Lynn. Tho scarlets had the best of tho gamo from the face off, eventually winning by ono goal to nil. Grey Lynn's backs played too far up tho field, leaving Suburbs' "homo" clear to run in and shoot. Had it not boon for Patterson's lino display at goal tho scoro would have been heavier.

Tho final struggle between Grafton and Suburbs was very exciting, each team was determined, and made a bold effort. Suburbs won the face-off and kept up a persistent attack for some minutes, but Knllondor played carefully, and continually relieved tho pressure. Hill and Atkinson, playing attack for Grafton, then set to work, and a scoro scorned inevitable, but Suburbs' goal-keeper was all there. Suburbs again put tho black and whites on tho defensive, and made several attempts to score. At this stago of tho gamo the defending wings for Grafton desertod their men and camo into tho centre to watch Suburbs' "home;" but tho scarlet skipper was not to bo baulked like this, and. on getting possession of lho robber, ho passed out to his unmarked wings. Morrin eventually scored with a side shot that beat tho sturdy man at the posts. Rcid, Stewart, and Luckio grafted hard to save defeat, but tho man that beat Grafton was Jack Thomson, who quite excelled himself at defending Suburbs' goal posts. The referee in chargo of each match was Mr. Todd, who has had considerable experience of lacrosse in England. Ho must have given entire satisfaction, for not on ono singlo occasion was his decision questioned by any player. During the interval between tho matches a number of lady friends who had mado elaborate preparations, handed round afternoon tea and refreshments. This was very much appreciated by those present, and greatly added to tho pleasure of the afternoon. At the conclusion of tho play tho Suburbs team, having won tho tournament, lined up at tho pavilion stops, when His Worship tho Mayor (Mr. David Goldic), who is president of the New Zealand Lacrosse Association, presented each member of the team with a handsome silver medal, gold centre, and suitably inscribed, tho gift of Mr. A. Kohn (vice-pro-sident). A call from tho secretary brought forth three hearty cheers for the ladies. Ringing cheers were also givon for the losers, His Worship tho Mayor, and Mr. Kohn. This brought a very pleasing and interesting afternoon to a close. Tho large assemblage of spectators, chiefly ladies, wero most enthusiastic ; ono and all seemed highly dolighted with tho gamo. A number of gontlcmen, as they left tho pavilion, shook hands with tho officials and congratulated them on the success of the day. Tho general verdict was: "It is a grand game,"

THE PARIS CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS.

[BY TF.LEGRAPII-— ASSOCIATION.] CnitiSTCiiURCH, Saturday.

Trouble in cycling circles over tho selection of the New Zealand representatives for Paris has assumed another phase. When the suspension was lifted from Sutherland, the leaguo agreed to allow Reynolds the same amount of steamer fare (£65) as was voted. After tho information now received, it appears Reynolds cannot accept such terms, if lie has to so as a representative of Now Zealand. Tho League of Wheelmen hold no distinction should be made between them, as Sutherland recoives an additional £35 expenses.
