WAITEKAURI G.M. CO. (LTD.).

At the Waitekauri Gold Mining Company's mine at Waitekauri, the new lode on the eastern branch at No. 4 level has been driven upon 88ft beyond its junction with the main reef, and most of the ore is of good grade. In tie rise going up on the same reef, 47ft from the junction, a good quality of ore is also being broken down. The work of placing the machinery in position at No. 5 levci (No. 1 shaft) is being steadily proceeded with, though delay has recently been caused by the heavy rains of the past week. Stoping is being continued in the various levels. No. 4 level crosscut from No. 2 shaft has been advanced 113 ft from the chamber, and no change in the country lias taken place. The low level drive is in a total distance of 2197 ft. The crosscut at No. 3 level, in the Te-Ao-Marama section, to intersect the lode system to the westward, is also well in hand. The low level in the Komata section is in a total of 1268 ft, of which 77ft were accomplished during the past month. The intermediate level being driven northwards in the old Waitekauri section, between the Smithy and Queen levels, ha-s been advanced 27ft from the rise connecting these levels. Ore of good quality was broken down during the course of driving operations. The Queen level, being taken northwards on the reef, is now in a total of 265 ft.

KLONDIKE CLAIM. Mr. Odium, of the Klondike claim at Omalni, has come across some good auriferous stone in the reef at a depth of 20ft from the surface in a low level tunnel. Samples of the stone contain gold visible to the naked eye, and these will l>e sent to Auckland for the inspection of Mr. Myers, who, it is understood, is floating a company to work the mine.

WAIHI EXTENDED G.M. CO. (LIMITED).

[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Waihi, Saturday. At the Waihi Extended Gold Mining Company's mine the bore is down close on 400 ft. Boring will be continued till about the middle of next week, and in the meantime preparations for the sinking of a shaft are being undertaken. Sinking operations, it is expected, will be commenced at the end of next week.

MAY QUEEN EXTENDED O.M. CO. [from our own correspondent.] Thames, Saturday. Capital progress is still being made with the sinking of the May Queen Extended Gold Mining Company's new main shaft, in the Holtianga section. A depth of 130 ft has been attained, which leaves about 40ft further to sink before opening out for a level. A capital class of country continues to be penetrated, and everything is in favour of payable gold being met with when the reefs are intersected. The tributers in the Adelaide section are crashing three loads of ore at the company's battery, and expect a remunerative return.

NEW WHAU G.M. CO. [FROM OUR OWN COBKESrOXIJKN'T.I Thames, Saturday. Tho stoping that is progressing upon the Rons of Freedom reef, in the New Whau Gold Mining Company's mine, is resulting in ore being broken out in which colours of gold are seen. The reef itself is about 3Jft in thickness, but the bulk of the ore saved is about 18in from the hangingwall side, although a little ore has also been saved from the extreme footwall during the past week. The rise that is being put up for a second pass, in order to provide for lengthening the block of slopes, has a further height of about Bft to go to reach the workings overhead. Rather tight country has been" met with at this latter point, but a change for the better is now taking place.

AUSTRALIAN MINING. Meliiourne, May 12. The report of the expert sent out from London to inspect- the Associated Gold Mines Company's property, at Kalgoorlio, is distinctly unfavourable. He says the expense is too heavy to carry on the mines as a paying concern, the wages paid are too high, and cheap labour alone would ensure si fair return. Only in South Africa could the grade of ore now in sight be worked at a profit.
