LAKE TAKAPUNA.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,-Anyone knowing this lake as I do, must 'bo aware that there is plenty of water for all purposes required. In order to settle all disputes, it shall bo tested with syphons. Earthenware pipes may be laid from the lake to the nearest place in Shoal Bay, and along tho foreshore at just below the level of high water, so as to allow tho pipos being covered with earth for protection. Near Barry's wharf tho pipes would cross tho mud in tho most convenient placo to Northcoto district, following the foreshore to near NVthcote. Hero a drivo will havo to be made through the Neck, then along (ho shore to near Kauri Point, whore the deep chitnnel is only about three cables length in width, and tho deepest part only 50ft. Across this channel the pipes may be carried on piles, very strongly supported, as the lido runs swiftly. So as not to impede navigation, I propose leaving an opening where tho pipes may be fixed on a framework of wood, and lowered to the bottom, the pipes at either end rising so as to connect with the pipes on the piles. When the channel is passed, tho pipes will be laid on the solid earth all tho rest of the way to the pump-ing-station at the Western Springs. By following the crook, very littlo digging will bo required until tho pipes are dipped closo to the reservoir, to give a gpod flow of water, which will bo free from iron-rust or any other impurity. Tho lako water is well known for its corroding effect on iron, consequently it is very expensive to work with anything but earthenware. As there will be voiy little pressure, earthenware pipes will do very well, and would also be a great saving, as iron is so expensive at present. Would it not 1)0 well for the City Council, before going in for more expenses re water supply, to have Mr. Bingham's opinion ? He is expected here on tho 15th of tins month, when I propose to lay all my plans before him.-I am, etc., E. Harrow. Buona Vista, Lake Takapuna, May B.
