BODY OF A MAN FOUND IN HARBOUR.
Yesterday, morning a young man named Ernest Peachey, employed at the Waitemata, Company's Sawmills, discovered the body of an old man floating in the harbour, about three chains from Logan Brothers' boatsheds. Captain Blackwell, a/nd a man named Henry Coe, assisted to get the body ashore, and Constable A. McDonnell was notified of th Ti , and removed, the body to the Morg." On examination of the body, tho constatle found nothing i'n the way of papers or property in the pockets to lead to identification. Subsequently the body was identified as that of " Ned" English, by Mr. D. Gouk, shipwright, with whom English had worked for years, and by a, boatman named Norton, who ihad worked with English, and had known him for 30 years. English was stated to be an old age pensioner, and had b'len here since 1817. Deceased's brother-in-law, Mr. Joseph Young, is said to be residing at Lake Takapuna, and Sub-inspector Wilson sent a constable to inform him, as it is said deceased's two daughters are residing with Mr. Young, but no word had been received from them up to a late hour, probably owing to the inclemency of the weather. The body does not seem to have been in the water over 24 hours. There seems every reason to believe that identification is complete, but of course tho police authorities would have liked to have had tho man identified by those stated to be his relatives. The inquest has been fixed for three o'clock this afternoon, by Dr. McArthur, coroner, so as to enable tho deceased's friends to arrive from Takapuna district. Deceased is said to have been following the occupation of a gumdigger. The police have boon unable to trace when deceased came to town, or anything a.bout his movements.
