INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES.
[BV telegram.— ASSOCIATION.] Christchurch, Monday. The Court of Arbitration was engaged all this morning hearing legal argument 011 the objection raised by the employers, that the grocery trade did not come within the scope of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act. To-morrow the builders' dispute will be taken. The president stated that be would, if possible, make an announcement with regard to the grocers' case to-morrow morning. Du.vedix, Monday. The carpenters and joiners' dispute was before the Conciliation Board to-day. The Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners asked for a week of 44 hours : pay at the rate of Is 4.Jd per hour ; overtime, time and a-half; preference to unionists, etc. Messrs. Reid and Gray objected to being made parties, and quoted the decision ot Mr. Justice Edwards in the engineering dispute ill Christchurch. The Board overruled the objection at that stage ; also the request- of Thomson, Bridget', and Co. to exclude them as a factory in accordance with the decision in Auckland. After hearing the statement of each side the Board adjourned till Wednesday to give its decision.
