PAWNBROKERS' CHARGES.

to the EDITOR. Sir,—i correspondents ventilate the subject of the high rates legally levied by pawnbrokers. It is not tho most desirable class of business, and requires close attention with long hours to make it pay, but it does seem an anomaly that while we have plenty of legislation dealing with the reduction of interest 011 loans of all descriptions, little or notlinw has been done in the direction of assisting the very poor, those who are compelled to borrow on their portable property, at high rjttes of interest. What is wanted is a Mont de Piete, the same as exists in Paris, where money is lent to the poor at about 5 per cent, per annum, and yet leaves a margin of profit. Something ought to be done in tile direction of assisting the poor and the needy as well as the landed proprietors and others.—l am, etc., Light.
