COMPENSATION TO HOTELS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— Rev. Mr. Williams, like all extremists, views the abovo subject from one point of view. Now, without having any peat sympathy with, or interest in, the liquor traffic, I can recognise a matter of injustioe in Mr. Williams' arguments. It may be true that the yearly license conveys no more rights than it implies; but does it not imply that if, yielding to expressed opinion of the licensing benches, applicants erected large and expensive premises to provide for the public, travelling and tourist conveniences, and conduct their business in ft proper manner, satisfactory to the authorities, the applicant has a right in good faith and honesty to a renewal of such license, and a protection from serious losses ? All the houses aro not owned by brewers, and in determining licenses to please a section of tho community, have we a right to inflict a wrong on any one person who has not deserved it ? Of course extremists wilt hear of no reasoning, and that is the rock they wilt always split upon, and frustrate the objects sought.—l am, ctc,, Light,
