WOMEN AND BANKRUPTCY.
, Single blessedness has not all the advantages, and the privileges of the married woman ftre never more apparent than in cases of bankruptcy, The Inspector-General in Bankruptcy lias just issued the report for 1898, from which it appears that the number of women bankrupts is 11 greater i ■ for the year 1898 than for the year 1897. < On reference, we find that the number for , that year was 422, so that for' 1898 the total was 433, For some reason unknown , there were 17 fewer failures, amongst women in 1897 than in 1896, • while in 1898 we find there is an increase again. • No less than 1397 women out of the 433 who failed were engaged in some trade or occupation, and ; the number of married women who executed deeds much exceeded the number of those ' against whom receiving orders were made.' "A couple ,of "hard , cases"—hard for the creditors—are ; quoted in v the report, ■in which women not trading apart from their " husbands took advantage of their immunity from the bankruptcy laws by..the provisions ['of the Married Women's Property Act."oi'- -V\ .
