ENTERTAINMENTS AND MEETINGS.
AMATEUR OPERA CLUB. •The Amateur Opera Club brought its "Dorothy" season, ivhich has been a most successful one, to a close last night, at the . Opera House, when there was a crowded at- ! tendance to witness the final performance, j The opera went splendidly from start to I finish, and all the performers acquitted them- • selves admirably. The principals were especially well received, and were frequently applauded for their solos. Altogether the per- 1 formance was a fitting close to such a satisfactory season. The club have every reason 1 to bo very gratified at the distinct success the opera has proved. Special mention should be made of the admirable and businesslike way in which Mr. Chas. Chambers, the secretary, has carried out his onerous duties, and the committee also deserve credit for their valuable assistance. THE GAIETY COMPANY. At the City Hall, Mr. P. R. Dix's clever combination of artists still continues to perform to very encouraging houses. For this evening a special farewell programme has been arranged, the occasion being the lastappearance of the Leslie Bros., Messrs. Collins and Browne, and Mr. Caston, all of whom have been such prime favourites during ' the time that they have been appearing under | the management of Mr. Dix. To-night's bill contains some capital items from each of these populai artists, and no doubt their many patrons will give them a splendid sendoff. This afternoon the company will give a matinee, tho charge for admission being sixpence U all parts. Tho full strength of the company will contribute to the programme. Adhering to its policy o. frequent changes in the personnel of the combination, the manage!, em has made arrangements for six new artists to appear on Monday evening. The latest additions hail from Australia, whence they 'i»ve been preceded by excellent reputations as capable artists. NO-LICENSE MEETING. The Prohibition League having 'termined not to run candi- < dates at the coming general election, the com- i mittee donated £10 towards the spread of tem- j perance literature. The committee 1 had endeavoured to fulfil its mission, which ( appears at the present to be to assist other j organisations rather than organising work . for itself. The receipts for the year were £77 18s lid, and after defraying expenses ' there was a bank balance of £49 15s lid. The j assets of the society are valued at £1500.
