SPORTING.

AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB'S SPRING MEETING. FIRST DAY. The Auckland Trotting Club's Spring Meeting was inaugurated at Potter's Paddock, hpsoni, on Saturday afternoon, when, favoured with delightful weather and an interesting programme of events, the sport was witnessed by upwards of 2500 persons. The secretary (Mr. C. F. Mark) and the officers associated with him arc to be complimented on the capable management of the meeting and on the promptitudo with which the various races were run, for, with the lengthy programme of eight events, tlio final item was disposed of close up to advertised time. The starting and judging, in the hands of Messrs. G. Cults and A. R. Harris respectively, gave every satisfaction. During the afternoon the good sum of £2707 10a (in 10s tickets) was passed through the totnlisators, under an efficient staff, while patrons who had occasion to attend luncheon in the rooms under the grandstand had every reason to be satisfied with tlio catering as carried out by Mr. A. F. Stilwell. The principal event of the day, the Spring Trot Handicap, one mile and a-half, for which the 10 coloured on the card went to the post, found Hard Case installed a slightly better favourite than Old Judge, while the remainder were pretty evenly backed. Investors were, however, treated to a surprise, the race being won by Patron, an aged gelding by Treason, who hails from Palmerston North, and is owned by Mr, T. W. Cooper, The winner, who trotted kindly throughout, cut down the field in bsincss-like fashion, and heading Cob, who made most of the running, a couplo of furlongs from homo drew out and won by something like seven lengths, after being eased slightly from the distance. Patron cut out the mile and ahalf in about a 2m. 40s. gait, which must he considered a very creditable performance. 11l the Electrio Trot Handicap (one mile), Yum Yum, coming out from the nick about 50yds from tho post, scored a sensational and unexpected victory, paying the three investors on her chance the big dividend of £84 3s, an exceptional return for 10s. A further sensation was provided by the Cap-a-pie pony Brooklet, owned by Mr. F. Kelly, winning the three flat races of the day—tlio Maiden Pony, October, and Flying Handicaps. In all three races Brooklet finished up her task in splendid stylo, and in tlio Flying Handicap in particular, whore slio was under the whip from the distance, and the race looked decidedly open, the daughter of Cap-a-pie exhibited tho utmost gameness, finishing as straight as a gun barrel under punishment. The results are as under:— Maiden Trot Handicap of 30sovs (saddle or harness); second horse to receive ssovs from tho stake. One mile. 92— F. W. Lambert's g g Pilot, aged, 6s. (A. Coralie, on the limit, was loading Hard Caso a dozen lengths as they turned into the top stretch, where Cob closed up, and a few yards further on ran into second place. This was the order down the cutting, and as they opened into the straight Cob continued to draw up, being on terms with Coralie when the' stand was reached, where Hard Case, Lady Retford, and Waitekauri were following, in that- order. From this point Cob drew away, and was half-a-dozen lengths to the good opposite the grandstand, where Patron, who had been moving along freely, could bo seen working his way through the field in good style. The Treason horse got into second place just before the dip was reached, and trotting faultlessly, was upsides with Cob before the home turn was readied, after which the issuo was never in doubt. Half-way up the straight Patron was eight or nine lengths to the good, and eased up slightly from the distance, came on and won by nearly seven lengths from Cob, Old Judge third. Nannie, Topsail, and Certain were quickest into their stride, and the former, jumping into the lead before they had gone half-ar furlong, showed the way round the back to the cutting a length and a-half in front of tho pair mentioned. At the home turn Brooklet, who got all the worst of the start, could he seen making her way up on tho outside, and responding to the call in game fashion, the daughter of Cap-a-pie cut down the field in the run to tho post, winning by a cleat length from Topsail, Nannie third, and Certain fourth. Coralie, on tho limit, was bowling along with a substantial lead from Woodbine when the stand was reached, and, trotting kindly, it looked as though the daughter of Maoriland could not lose. At the back, however, she broke badly, and before she could again get into her stride Woodbine had closed up the gap considerably, with Alice and Hollywood next in order; but settling down again, Coralie still appeared to hold a good winning chance until within about 20yds of the distance post, where, breaking again, Wcodbine camo with a well-timed run on the outside, and, assuming tho lead just inside the distance, won by a dozen yards, A'ice, 20yds away, in third place. New Boy, Little Tom, and Hinemoa were the first to get going, and the three were well together as they raced to the first obstacle, Hinemoa being the first to land. The trio, with Nellio close up, continued to make the running through the cutting to the second jump just below the main stand, where Deceiver and Fairy came to grief, but Hogan, who had the mount on tho latter, was soon in the saddle again, and set out in pursuit of the field. Hinemoa had a bit the best of it, as they ran out of the straight, and increasing tho advantage through tho top strut oh and down the cutting the daughter of Rangatira never left the issue in doubt, scoring comfortably by the best part of four lengths from Nellie, who was in turn a neck in front of Little Tom, tho latter making a dash for second honours in tho last few strides. Venus finished fourth and Deceiver whipped in the field. Time, 2m. 345. Totalisator, 989. Dividend, £1 17s. Gay Belle closed up going out of the straight-, and catching Viscount at the back, was in command as they turned down tho dip into tho cutting. Trotting kindly, slio looked like winning at the homo turn, but breaking a few yards further oil, tho field closed up, and 60 yards from home half-a-dozen of them wero still in the hunt. Forty yards from the post Yum Yum camo out from the ruck on the outside, and cutting down the field in tho last fow strides, the Childe Harold mare won by the best part, of three lengths from Gay Belle, Patron filling third place. Temptation could bo seen coming back to them in the cutting, and as the liliputians opened into tho straight First Whisper, Cortam, and Brooklet were just in front of the others, and whips coming out all round a great race ensued to the post, Brooklet, who responded with great gamcness, eventually drawing out in tho last fow strides and winning by better than a length from First Whisper, Certain third.
