THE FIRE AT SMEETON'S.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln rending nil account of the above in this morning's Herald, I notice that "tliev 'the firemen) discovered it was impossible for them to fight (he fire from the front, as (ha front was subdivided into offices," etc. Surely this shows neclect 011 the part of sonic one in authority. To my own knowledge, it was the custom in London for the fire brigade authorities to make themselves thoroughly conversant with the interior of all buildings in which they might possibly have to fight a fire. Of course this would only refer to buildings of the larger and morn important class, and to this Mr. Smeeton's store would probably belong; had such a knowledge been obtained in this case, possibly the loss would have been very much smallor.—l am, etc., Henry Wilding.
