Mk. C. E. S. Gillies left for Sydney by the Mariposa yesterday. Mr. Allan Carmiehael, of Otautau. is definitely out as a candidate for the Wallace seat at the general election. Mr. J. 0. Hanna, inspector of the New Zealand Insurance Company, was a passenger to Sydney yesterday by the Mariposa. Inspector Ciillen has been off duty for the past two or three days, and has been confined to the house, through a severe cold or influenza.

It is understood that Mi. T. E. Taylor, M.H.R., will pay Auckland a visit this month. He is to give addresses in Auckland and Parnell. His Worship the Mayor (Mr. D. Goldh) has received further promises of ornamental seals for the Albert Park. The following citizens will donate one each:—Messrs. H. B. Morton. J. Kirkei, J. J. Craig, W. S. Wilson, and J. -1. Holland, M.H.R. The Oamaru Mail states that the Hastings Standard has been purchased by Messrs. Walter Jones and W. Hart, _ Mr. Walter Jones is a son of the proprietor of the Oamaru Mail, and Mr. Hart served his time in the Mail office, where he has been employed for over 22 years. The Wesleyan Church at Zion Hill, Birkenhead. was the scene ot a bright and very pretty wedding yesterday afternoon, when Mr. F. H. Lennard, manager for Messrs. D. Hay and Son. was married to Miss Kate A. Taylor, second daughter of Mr. Win. Taylor, of Birkenhead. The popularity of the bride in the district was evidenced by the beautiful aspect of the church in the way of decoration (the works of her co-workers in the church and Sunday-school), and the large attendance of friends, the church being full. There was a display of r.ikau bowers round 'the building, and (lie communion railing and pulpit were gaily decorated with white cosmos, chrysanthemums, and ferns, whilst immediately above where the couple stood hung a large and beautiful floral bell of lilies and chrysanthemums. On the bridal party entering the church the organist (Mrs. Button) struck up " The Bridal March," after which the choir sang (lie livnin "The Voice That Breathed O'er Eden.' The marriage ceremony was performed bv the Rev. C. E. Beecroft, and the bride was given away by her father. The bride wore a brocaded. silk dress, with train and bridal veil, with orange blossoms, and carried in her band a beautiful bridal bouquet,' gift of the bridegroom. The bridesmaids were Miss Mary Taylor and Miss Olive Npraggon (sister and niece of the bride respectively), who were dressed in peagreen, with hats to match, and carried pretty bouquets. The bridegroom was attended by Mr. Leonard J. Taylor. As the bridal party retired from the church a bevy of little girls from the school strewed flowers in the path to the carriage. The guests (including the relatives of both, and Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Button, and Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Wilson) adjourned to the residence ("Highbury") of the bride's father, where afternoon tea' was dispensed and a little later Mr. and Mrs. Lennard, after receiving many congratulations and good wishes, left for their honeymoon. The presents were very numerous and handsome.
