RESIGNATION OF THE CHIEF JUSTICE.

The resignation of the Chief Justice, which is announced to-day, places at the disposal of the Government an, offico of great distinction and importance. It is most sincerely to be hoped that in selecting his successor they will sink all party considerations, and endeavour to secure for the position the lawyer best fitted by his character, conduct, experience and legal attainments to occupy so exalted an office. Our Wellington correspondent mention the name of Sir Robert Stout in this connection, and probably no better choice could be made. Sii Robert is acknowledged to be the leading member of the New Zealand Bar, and a man of great ability! He has retired from ufitivo political life, and is in every way admirably qualified for the vacant office on tlio Bench. The retirement of Sir James Prendergast was not ■ wholly unexpected.. It had been spoken of as probable tor some

timo past. Nevertheless, it will be generally revetted, for Sir James \jis an able and upright judge and conm aided the respect both of the orofp sion and the public.
