DANGER OF COAL CARGOES. A case which has just formed the subject of investigation by the Marine Court of Flensburgh again serves (says the Shipping Gazette) to call attention to the very common danger to which coal-carrying vessels are exposed by want of sufficient attention to tile ventilation of the holds. While the Titus was on her way from Swansea to Kiel with a cargo of anthracite coal, it became necessary, on account of the weather, to fasten down the hatches, and the hold being insufficiently ventilated as it tinned out, a quantity of coal gas found its way through the wooden bulkhead into the adjoining chain locker. Two of the crew had occasion to enter the locker, and one of them striking a match in the dark, an explosion ensued. Tipping open the deck overhead, and injuring the men about the arms and faces. The Government Commissioner, pointing to the frequency of such explosions, urged that the master had been guilty of grave negligence in not duly warning the men beforehand of their danger, and demanded tho withdrawal of his certificate. The Court, however, while recognising that the master had shown a want of proper precaution in the matter, declined to visit tile offence with such a drastic penalty, and relused to accede to the motion,

\ STORMY VOYAGE. The Eilbek, which completed a long passage to Melbourne from burg, tile other clay, was in very severe weather. Leaving Hamburg on January 1, the ship got away through the Channel on a fairly even heel, hut on reaching the North Atlantic she got into the midst of a network of squalls and storms that assailed her with terrific violence, and soon had her a long way off the usual course. Instead of reaching the northeast traces in the customary 17 to 21 days, j the Eilbek met with violent bead winds, ac- ! companied with blinding rain storms and ! mountainous seas, which drove her away j westward, and effectually prevented her from making any southing for about 14 days, or days together she had had to bo kept with almost bare poles, and lay to, with tremendous seas breaking over her, and threatening to engulf her. Several members of the crew repeatedly bad narrow escapes from being washed overboard. So adverse was the weather in the northern waters that it drove the Eilbek away westward until her position was more that of a vessel bound to America than one seeking to make her way to Australia. She was about 50 days out before she got into the north-east trades, which were taken about 20deg N., and lasted with variable strength until about 4deg N. PORT OF OXEHUXGA. ARRIVALS.
