POLICE COURT NEWS. His Wobsuip Mr. H. S. Wardell, S.M., sit on the Bench at the Auckland Police Court yesterday, INSULTING LANGUAGE. \Ym. Chester pleaded not guilty to com- ' jnitting a breach of the Harbour Board bylaws by using insulting language to one Thomas Barrett, when plying for hire as a porter. -Mr. McVeagh appeared for the Harbour Board, and His Worship, after hearing the evidence, found the defendant piiltv, and inflicted a fine of ss, with cost* 30s.' UNRULY CHILDREN*. Two small boys, John Harris and Arthur Parsctt. were charged with being children frequenting the Railway Wharf, and not laving any visible means of subsistence, within the meaning of tho Industrial Schools Act, 18S2. It appeared that the boys had been sleeping out at night in tanks for four nights. His Worship reprimanded th* boys, and the pa-rents being in Court, and prepared to take them home, ho allowed tie charges to he withdrawn. IIIIKACHES OK THE BY-LAW. James Rug* pleaded guilty to the charge, that being the driver of a borough stago carriage, he did improperly delay such carriage on the journey to Parnell, a fine of 10s and costs being imposed. Win. Mcnzies, 'bus-driver, was fined 10s, and costs 7s, for not leaving the standing in' Queen-street in such succession of time as nj pointed. Wm. Scarbcro, 'bus-driver, pleaded guilty to not allowing another 'bus in Queen-street tc pass on the right, oi off, side, and a, fine of 20s, with costs 7s, was inflicted. A H. Blaney was ordered to pay a fine of 10s. being convicted of leaving his cart unattended in St. Martin's Lane. Ellen Barry wa> also fined 10s for obstructing the carriage road in Queen-street, by allowing a ho«e and cart to remain tlitl'ion. The inspector of traffic (Mr. T. C. Turner) pioseeuted in each of the above rases. Frank Litlkproud was charged with ridin); a bicyolo after dark without having a proper and sufficient light attached, and a fill'- of 10s, with costs 7s, was imposed. Finlay Ross, an express cartman, foi feeding his horse without having the feed-ba<* attached to its head, was fined ss, with costs 7s. Oscar Jackson was convicted of driving a vehicle after dark without having sufficient lights attached, and was fined 10s, aud costs 7s. DRUNKENNESS. Eli Butterworth. convicted of this offence, was fined 10s, in default 48 hours' hard labom. Ann Tisley, for being found drunk in Vincent-street, was ordered to pay a fine of ss. and 2s 6d costs, with an alternative of 24 hours' gaol. Two first-offending inebriates were discharged with a caution. an ADJOURNED CASE. The case. Edward Deery v. George Martin, in which the complainant charged the defendant with assaulting his child, Mary Elien Decry, by .sinking her with a whip', vac adjourned till to-morrow, after being partially heard. Mr. Mahnny appeared icr the prosecution, and Mr. Br'ookfield for the defence. OXEHTXGA POLICE RT.-Moxdat. [Before Dr. W. R. Close-Erson, J.P.j Drunkenness: John Peterson *as charged with being; drunk while in charge of a horso and spring cart on Sunday afternoon in Princes-street, Onelmnga. Sergeant Greene deposed to arresting tho accused, who, with two other men, were driving as stated above. The Bench remarked that the practice of driving out to Onelmnga from Auckland and other places and getting drunk was becoming too common, and he was determined to assist the police in putting it down. People guilty of this offence were liable to a penalty of £10, or, at the discretion of tho presiding justice, to imprisonment for any term not exceeding three months. As the defendant had pleaded guilty, he would imposo a penalty of £1 and costs, or in default 14 days' imprisonment, but ho intended to inflict much heavier penalties for any similar offence in the future.
