MEETINGS AND ENTERTAINMENTS.
A iiFKTiNT, of the Working Committee of the New Zealand Literary Association was held on Tuesday afternoon at Mr. Ellington's office. Present: Messrs. Emngton ,in the chair), Mackeclinie, Ngata, Belworthy, Hight, Keeang. Garland, St. Clair, Cottle, and Mrs. McKay. The business transacted was the election of a number of new members, and the revision of the syllabus. Amongst the new members, Air. Thornton, of To Aute College; Mr. Al- - of tho Boys' High School, Clmstchurch: and Mr. Ward, of tho New Plymouth High School, might be mentioned as showing the interest already taken in the movement in other parts of New Zealand. With the new members the roll now amounts to over 60. The secretary, Mr. Tlios. Cottle, was instructed to have a number of the revised circulars printed for distribution amongst those interested in the movement. Letters were read from members in Otago and Canterbury, expressing great interest in the association, and assui antes of its success as soon as it became belter known throughout New Zealand. Captain William Jackson Barry, who is well known, particularly in Otago, as one of the colony's pioneer settlers, delivered a lecture last evening in the Devonport Hail. There was a fair attendance, and the lecturer. who sketched in an interesting manner the career of several eminent colonials, and kept his audience amused with the recital of interesting anecdotes, was well received, and listened to with great attention.
