ATHLETIC SPORTS.

THE NEW ZEALAND AMATEUR ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS. The team chosen by the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club for the New Zealand championship meeting, to be held at Dunedin on February 4, leave Onohunga by the s.s. Takapuna this morning at ten o'clock, catching the five minutes to nine train from the Auckland Railway Station. Owing to the inability of R. Oliphant to obtain tho necessary leavo of absence, and to tho fact that A. W. Bell is unable to leave his business, the team will bo short of two of its foremost representatives, and as now constituted will consist of but four men, viz., G. Smith, W. H. Madill, D. Wilson, and James To Paa. This may be expected to interfere with Aucklands prospects of winning the championship banner, although tho representatives may be expected to account for soma of tho principal championships.

This match wan played yesterday afternoon. Bealo captained tho Auckland loam anil Quinlan acted in a like capacity for the Combined eleven. Quinlan was fortunate in winning the toss, and elected to bat, sending in Olilson and Lavers, to whom woro opposed R. Harrison and Bealo. Kims came steadily until the score readied 27, when Lavers was bowled for a carefully compiled 14. Young filled tho breach, and he and ((bison carried the scoro to 42, when the latter was smartly taken at point by A. Harrison off his brother. Tho outgoing batsman had made 17 in nice style: ——17. Holden, tho next man, made 8 in free stylo, when ho put up a ball from HeaJe and. was caught by Wholan: 53-5-8. .1, Whelan, whe followed in, mado two, and was then clean bowled by Bealo: 55-4-2. llutton and Hinlon both fell victims to tho saino bowler without troubling the scorers: 57—5—0 and 57—6—0. Young also loft at the same total for a care-fully-made nine. With the exception of tiatland. six, not out, uono of the others made any stay, and the innings closed for the small total of 66. Bealo and Harrison both bowled well, and captured five wickets each. The Auckland men started batting with Whelan and Hicks, the first pair of bowlers being Holden and Young. Runs began to come freely from tho start, end 61 runs were scored in the first half-hour. Eleven runs later Whelan was clean howled by tiatland for a very nice contribution of 50. Ho had scored very freely and welt: 72-I—so. H. Harrison and Hicks carried the score to 97, when the former left, being lbw. The outgoing batsman had made Ins 17 in much freer style than usual, and had hard luck in getting out.
