TOTE BETTING CASES AT DUNEDIN.
HEAVY FINES. [BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Duneuin, Thursday, The prosecutions arising out of the recentraid on the betting offices came before Mr. Carew, S.M., to-day. Abraham Moss was fined £50 and costs £4 lis. Two of the witnesses stated that they had gqne to" back their opinion, as the result of a conversation with Chief-Detective O'Brien. John Dalziei and R. Hoops, clerks in Moss' office, were fined £5 and costs, Mr. Cawv pointing out that they were liable to a fine of £100. Peter Grant was fined £100, he having been previously convicted, the Magistrate saying that any further case against him would be dealt with by imprisonment.' Whelan and Broad,' for assisting Grant, were fined £7, and costs. Thomas Harnett was fined £50 and costs, William Banks (assistant to Barrett.) was fined £5 and costs. David Short, for being in Grant's office, and Thomas McMillan, for being in Barrett's office without lawful excuse, wero each fined £5 and costs. The ease against Alice Fitzgerald was dismissed.
