FIRE IN EDEN TERRACE.
On Saturday night the Grey-street firebell rang out an 'alarm, a glare of fire being seen across the Karangahape Bom , as if the fire was in Newton East. The fire, however, proved to be farther away, namely, in the New North Road, Eden Terrace, and in the cabinetmaker's workshop belonging to and occupied by Mr. Robert Short, cabinetmaker. The Eden Terrace Fire Brigade, under Captain Butler, turned out, as also the Auckland Salvage Corps, undei Captain Fieid, but the fire had too great a hold before it was discovered for the brigade to save it, and the building and its contents were totally destroyed, with the exception of about" £10 worth of timber. Mr. Short was working in the workshop in the afternoon, and had used a nail-can with some fire in it to heat glue. He finished work at fivo o'clock and the fire in the nail-can having apparently died out, he left it. He is insured in the Norwich Union for £237 on building, stock, and gas engine. Constable Hinton, of the Eden Terrace police station, and Constable Rowles, of Boston Road, were also on the spot to render assistance.
