THE WESTKALIA. The Uuddart-Parker steamer Westralia, Captain Alfred 11. Thorpe, arrived from Southern and East Coast ports yesterday morning, after a quick run of 221 hours from Gi6bome. The steamer brought a number of passengers for this port, and has a number for Sydney, besides a quantity of general cargo. Mr. Sampson, the purser, reports:— Westralia left Dwiedin on the 16th inst.. and arrived at Lyttclton at daylight on the 17th, where a largo general cargo was taken on board, ' the greater portion being for Auckland; also several racehorses returning from the Christchurch races. Leaving Lyttelton on the 17th, Wellington was reached on the 18th. Napier on the 19th, and Gisborne on the 20th, and the Auckland Wharf reached at 9.30 a.m. yesterday. On Saturday evening, taking advantage of the fine weather prevailing, Captain Thorpe had a concert held for the pleasure of the passengers, the concert being held in the Westralia's spacious saloon, and proving a great success. Fine weather prevailed throughout the passage. The Westralia leaves for Sydney at 4 p.m. to-day, THE OVALAU. The Union Company's steamer Ovalan, Captain George Crawshaw. arrived from Sydney and the Islands at 9.30 p.m. yesterday. Mr. Adams, the purser, to whom we are indebted for late papers and our Island despatches, reports: The Ovalau left Sydney at 12.30 p.m. on July 31, and passed Elisabeth Reef at 1 p.m. on the 2nd inst.; had Hunter's Island abeam at 4 p.m. on tie 6th. and arrived at Suva at midnight on the 7th. Left Suva at 8.15 p.m. on the 9th, and was abeam of the Island of Niuafoou at 1.30 p.m. on the 11th: passed Apolima at 2.30 p.m. on tie 12th, and anchored in Apia roadstead at 5 o'clock the same evening. Left Samoa at 7 p.m. on the 13th, and had Boscawen Island abeam at 1 p.m. on the 14th, called at Vavau on the 15th, and Nukualofa, on the 16th, and arrived in port as above. The Ovalan was not permitted to discharge or load cargo at any of tho Tongan ports, on account of quarantine regulations. Experienced light variable winds. THE EMPREZA.-ROUGH WEATHER. The barque Enipreza arrived at Sydney from Auckland on the 12th" inst. Captain Douglas reports leaving Auckland on the 16th ult., with strong south-east winds, and clearing North Cape on the 19th. At midnight on the same date a hard easterly gale set in, lasting till the 21st, when there was a further rough experience in the shape of strong southwest to north winds, increasing to gales of hurricane force, with rough seas, Captain Douglas being compelled to heave the vessel to for 12 days. On the 3rd inst. the wind veered into the south-east and east, and continued from that quarter till the 6th inst., when another fierce westerly gale was encountered, with a mountainous sea, lasting 48 hours, during which time the barque was again hovo-to. Thence to port light variable winds prevailed. j THE VALE ROYAL. The Vale Royal, a handy steel barque, which . has arrived at Adelaide from Mauritius, was , built by Murdoch and Murray, of Glasgow, ■ in 1884, and was recently purchased by Captain Munro for intercolonial service, for which she is admirably adapted, being equal to. standing up without ballast or carrying 560 tons dead weight on 12ft 6in water. She is i described as a very sightly craft, with steel lower masja and yards, and a very good cabin fitted in a superior manner, the joinery being of polished mahogany, and the upholstery being plush. The Hnddart-Parker steamer Elingamite is due from Sydney this morning, and leaves for East Coast and Southern ports to-morrow afternoon, NEW STEAMER FOR THE COASTAL TRADE. Tho new steamer, built by Messrs. C. and W. Bailey, to the order of Captain A. McGregor, for tho Auckland, Wade, and Matakana trade, was launched from the yards of the builders on Saturday night, and taken over to the Queen-street Wharf, where the boiler and engines will he lifted into her today, An attempt was made to launch the

steamer in the morning, but, after going down the ways for about half tho distance, an accident happened through the ways giving way, and the progress of the steamer was stopped. During the day the steamer was lifted up into position by the aid of jacks, and she was successfully launched on the evening's tide. Tho christening ceremony was performed by Miss Annie Ross, daughter of one of the owners, who named the vessel the Orewa. The dimensions of the steamer are:-Length. 70ft; beam. 16.6 ft; depth, 7ft; draught, 4.6 ft. She is constructed of the best heart of kauri timber, the floors being, of hardwood, and is on the diagonal principle, with three skins, and is copper fastened throughout. She has a good deal of deck room. The saloon Is aft, under the poop deck, and will have sleeping accommodation for 23 persons, and will be upholstered in Utrecht velvet, and fitted with all necessary conveniences. A ladies' cabin and accommodation for the captain and engineers will bo constructed under the bridge deck, and the lavatories, etc., will also be in the same vicinity. Tho engines and boiler have been constructed bv Messrs. Cable and Co., of Wellington, and will be fitted in at once, under the superintendence of Mr. V. McKeegan. The steamer has been very faithfully built, nothing but the best of material having been used. The Orowa will have a cargo capacity of about 40 tons, and is to be employed m the trade between Auckland, Wade, and Matakana, and will no doubt prove a very serviceable boat. She is expected to bo ready to take up her running early next month.
