THE REVOLT AT MONTEVIDEO.

ATTACK ON THE GOVERNMENT . i; \. BUILDINGS. ■'■. '>$&

FOUR HUNDRED KILLED AND (■'* WOUNDED.

Buenos Atbes, Argentina, July 4 ; — A revolution has begun in Uruguay, and there was fierce fighting in the streets of the city to-day. The revolt is not yet suppressed. The outbreak started at seven o'clock a.m., when two federal regiments of artillery, one being the Fourth, headed by Generals Casimiro Garcia and Ricardo Estevan,- attacked the municipal buildings and police headquarters. The police, who were soon massed in large numbers, fought with great spirit, but were overpowered. The revolutionists soon had possession of their quarters and also established a large force in the barracks of the artillery, which they took in spite of resistance upon the part of the troops who remained loyal. President Cuestas was soon made aware of the desperate character of the revolt. He made his headquarters in the Cathedral, whence he directed the operations of defence. Among other orders issued by him was one commanding the police to build barricades in the streets to check the advance of the rebellious troops. He also at once ordered the mobilisation of the National Guards. At the present moment, however, the rebels undoubtedly have the advantage. Colonel Morador was killed and Colonel Polio was wounded. It is impossible now to estimate the loss in killed and wounded. The legations of foreign countries are protected hy marines landed from warships of different nationalities in the harbour.

Montevideo, July 5.— revolt, it is now asserted, has been quelled. The chiefs of the revolted regiments have submitted. Generals Garcia, Estevan, and Amino have surrendered. Their lives will be spared. The city is much damaged. It is estimated that the killed and wounded number 400. All is now quiet.
