MEETINGS AND ENTERTAINMENTS.

* A meeting of the Show and Finance Committee of the Aitokland Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held at the Association Rooms, Queen-street, yesterday afternoon, Mr. W. Wcstney, president, in the chair. With regard to the association's resolution urging tlio appointment of a veterinary surgeon for the Auckland district, tlio Secretary of Agriculture wrote stating that if the Bills now before the House on agricultural pursuits wcro passed into law, it would bo found necessary to re-arrange tho veterinary staff, meanwhile the association's resolution would havo to remain in abeyance. It was decided to offer prizes of £20, £10, and £5 for the best pen of three Lincoln rams under 18 months at .the forthcoming show, the object being to induce Southern breeders to send up sheep for exhibition and subsequent sale. To meet the convenience of Mr. T. F. Cheeseman, it was decided to postpone the lecture by that gentleman to farmers until next Friday week, also that tho schedule of prizes for the next show, as revised, should be issued forthwith for the information of inlending exhibitors. Tho Amateur Dramatio and Burlesque Club managed by Miss Marcollci Alexander again staged the sensational drama, "Aurora Floyd," and the crisp burlesque, "Belle of tho Barley Mow," last evening', at the Opera House. Among tho spectators were tho members of tho Hawke's Bay football team. Miss Alexander and her capable amateurs successfully interpreted tho pieces, and gained a good deal of applause. The season closes tonight. A meeting of the Council of the National Association was held last night at the rooms, Mercantile Chambers, Queen-street, when a lot of routine business was dealt with, and correspondence with tho Eight Hours' League and other bodies was read. Arrangements were also mado for the next annual meeting to be held on September 8 next.

The annual meeting of the Newmarket Bowling Club was held in the pavilion last evening. "The president (Mr. 0. G. Laurie) occupied tho chair. The secretary presented tho annual report and balance-sheet, which showed the club to be in a prosperous condition. The receipts were £64 8s sdj expenditure, £59 17s 9d, leaving a credit bianco of £4 10s Bd. The election of officers for the coming year resulted as follows: — President, Mr. 0. G. Laurie (reelected); vice-presidents, Messrs. C. Spooncr, J. Lumpkin, and William Morgan; liui. vice-prcteidents, Messrs. A. Myers, A. Thompson, J. H. M. Carpenter, and J. J. Craig; committee, Messrs. Southwell, Kilgour, H Kent, and A. Holmes; green superintendent, Mr. J. Kilgour (re-elected); delegates to the Auckland Association, the president, together with Messrs. Simpson, Bcvins, and G. Kent. The hon. secretary (Mr. W. Hogg) was re-elected. Votes of thanks were passed to the committee for past services, with a final one to Mr. Kilgour, the green superintendent, for his untiring /.eal during the year. The meeting decided that the subscription should be reduced to cue guinea for the coming year. At the close of the meeting seven new members were proposed. In order to make the grounds as attractive, as possible, it was decided to carry out the fence to its proper boundary, pud erect a new picket fence, with entrance from the Manukou Road, a sum of £4 5s towards the cost being subscribed at the meeting. As thu green is in first-class condition, the "tub is looking forward with great confidence to an early opening.' The fourth dance of the 1898 season of the Ponsonby "At Homes" was held last light in the Ponsonby Hall, and proved quite as enjoyable as the previous gatherings organised by the committee.
