AUCKLAND SWIMMING CLUB.
The final heat for the 216 yards event in tho Aggregate Handicap, tindor the auspices of the Auckland Swimming Club, was swum off last evening in the Albert-street Baths. Five competitors faced the starter, Mr. S. K. Hughes, the course being six lengths of the baths. The swimmers finished in this order: J. W. Cook, 165., 1; P. J. Bailey, 215., 2; G. A. Tyler, scratch, 3; T. V. Frost, 18s., *; P. H. Hughes, 235., 5. Time, 3m. 14- 2-ss. Winner's time, 3m. 7 2-ss. Time of scratch man, 2in. 535., which is Ms. better than \V. J. Gormley's New Zealand record of 2m. 53 ♦•ss. for the 220 yds, only four yards further and an exceedingly good performance. The racing was of the finest order and spoke volumes for Mr. Eyre's handicapping, as the fivo competitors finished this long swim almost simultaneously. Tyler went too quickly at the start to keep up the pace, appearing to have his men in hand at the third lap, when ho was almost level with them, but the effort had proved too much and from this out ho was unable to reduce the small lead they had secured, The points for tho Cup now stand; G. A, Tyler 11, J. W. Cook 10, R, Bell and C. 0. Hughes 5, T. V. Frost, 11. Foster, and P. J. Bailey 3, F. S. Hedges 2, J, Fraser, C. Burke, and H. J. Bailey each 1. Local swimming circles are greatly exercised as to who will win the 100 yds Championship at the Auckland Graving Dock on Saturday next, when tho Auckland Swimming Club hold their annual carnival. H. J. Bailey, already the possessor of eleven championships, lis training most assiduously for the event, and as it will bo remembered that ho cut out V2s in 1894, he must be hold to have a good chance and is sure to reduce the time. He has, however, on this occasion, to meet F. S. Hedges, who is in tho pink of condition, and G. A. Tyler in the flush of youth, both of whom are almost certain to break 705., and from what we can hear of H. Hooy, he is in greatly lm proved condition, and may lie expected to make a great struggle for the honour. C. O. Hughes also competes in this event, which is his favourite distance. The field will, without doubt, be the finest that has yet met in Auckland.
At a committet meeting of tlio Auckland Araatour Swimming Club held last evening, it was decided to place on the gala programme a handicap for young ladies at schools and colleges, distance 50 yards. Tho secretary reported that Die entries for all events were considerably in excess of last year. The handicaps for the Plunge and Ladies' 50yds Handicap are as under: Plunge: H. J. Bailey, scratch; A. Wilson, scratch; J. L. Easdale, lift-; R. A. Moyle, lift; J. Russell, 2ft; J. A. McLeod, 3ft; C. D. Hill, 3ft. Ladies' 50yds Handicap: Miss M. Cook, scratch; Miss B.
