NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWNING.
[BY TELEGRAPH.— association.] Gisborne, Friday, A narrow esoape from drowning was experienced last evening by Mr. Townley (the Mayor), Captain Thompson (harbour master), Mr. King (harbour engineer), and Mr. Hnstie (an employee of the Harbour Board), who were engaged taking soundings in a flat-bottomed boat. At the entrance to the river the boat was swamped and the four occupants were precipitated into the water. Messrs. Townley and Hnstie managed to grasp a line thrown to them, and were hauled out of the water. Captain Thompson was pluckily rescued by his son, while Mr. King clambered on the bottom of tho overturned boat, which went floating down the river. Someone jumpod off the breakwater and assisted him to land on the pier.
