Surgeon-Major Bourke was a passenger to the Islands by theTaviuni last evening. Sir Kenneth Gumming, who arrived by tho Gothic, is renewing his acquaintance with New Zealand. Captain Norman Beaumont, of the Hauroto, remained behind at Suva this trip on company's business, and will return by the Hawea, Dr. Frederick Maurice Purchas (son of the Rev. Dr. Purchas), Mrs. Purchas, and Miss Mildred Purchas arrived by the s.s, Anglian this morning. One of the passengers from Wellington for Vancouver by the Miowera on Saturday last was Mr. C. Doncker, attorney for the General Exploration Company, who is returning to Germany. Mr. John McKenzie, of this city, late second mate of the barquentine Waitemata, has successfully passed his examination for a certificate of competency as first mate of a foreign-going ship. Mr. J. Becroft, member for Ponsonby in the City Council, is now progressing towards convalescence, after his somewhat lengthy illness. lb was supposed to be a case of blood-poisoning. Mr. Christie Simonsens, business manager for the Bland Holt Dramatic Company, arrived in town yesterday for the purpose of making arrangements for the company's opening at the Opera House, which takes place on Boxing Night. Yesterday Mr. Hugh Campbell was nominated for the vacant seat on the Parnell Borough Council, caused through the recrement of Mrs. Matson, by Messrs. L. D. Nathan and John Mowbray. Mr. John McCabe will also bo nominated for the vacancy, it is understood by Messrs. Briggs and J. Gilmour.
