An Unwelcome Visitor—A dishevelledlooking one-legged man named Willie Hoist, was charged with having been found by night without lawful excuse on the premises of the Rev. L. FitzGerald. Hie reply was, " I went to see the parson, and as he was not in I sat down and waited." From the evidence given it appeared that he amused himself by throwing lighted matches about, and the neighbour! were afraid there would be a conflagration. Sergeant Clarke stated many complaints had been made against the man. His Worship said the accused appeared to be a confirmed vagrant, and sent him to Mount Edeu for three months.

A Question of Costs.—When the ad> joutned cases against R. M. Heighten, who was charged with having caused damage to theKaipara railway, by filling in a certain drain were called on, Dr. Laishley (injtructed by Messrs. Devore and Cooper) appeared for the department, and applied for a further adjournment. He stated that the department claimed some £7 7s costs, and owing to the absence of the district engineer, counsel was not prepared to give evidence as to those costs. Mr. Reed appeared for the defendant, and in objecting to the adjournment, said his client had done everything required by the department. His Worship granted the application for the adjournment, and fixed the case for next Monday, no further adjournment to bo made unless with defendant's coisent. Mr. Reed applied for costs, but Ilia Worship decided to allow the matter to stand over for decision by the magistrate hearing the case. Alleged Theft and Forgery.—Michael Tobin, alias John Argall, was remanded till the sth November upon a charge of having, at Auckland, forged and uttered a postal order for £2 2s Hi, and also upon a eecond charge of having stolen a prayer-book at Tatars, near Thames. Bail was allowed. Alleged Desertion. — Alfred Thomas Durham, charged with baviag deserted his children at Christchurch, was remanded till the fifth of November; bail being allowed. Alleged Theft. — Henry Mahon was charged, that on October 20 last, at Parnell, he did steal from the person of James Mylne Sheppard a leather parse of the value of ss, containing six one peund notes, and a number of papers. Mr. Reed conducted the case for the informant, and Mr. Baxter appeared for the accused. It appeared that Sheppard, a remittance man, was being driven up in the direction of Parnell, on the day of the occurrence, by the accused (a cab-driver). Sheppard was in an intoxicated state. It was alleged that Mahon eased his fare ot his purse and its contents. Mr. Baxter reserved the defence, and accused was committed for trial; bail being allowed.
