AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the City Council was,held yesterday evening, when there were present: Hie Worship the Mayor (Mr. P. Dlgnan), in the chair, and' Messrs. Jatmeaon., Warren. Trenwitb, Farrell, Grey, Kidd, Cairns, Macnab, Becroft, Stichbury, Patterson, Glover, Heweon, Julian, and Hesketh. ' '. ' . KarakastbektDisainaob.— H. Reynolds wrote, drawing attention to the disgraceful state of Karnka-streat, the defective drainage in which resulted in the overflow running into his property. The lighting of the street wis alto defective, and (he writer asked that something be done to improve matters. Referred to the streets committee, together with a petition in the came connection presented by Mr, Jamieson. Addition to Honsii. — Messrs. Frlpp and Goldsbro' applied for permission to effect certain alterations and additions in' wood to Dr. T. Hope Lewis' residence in Symonds-street. The application was granted. „QtrAY-BTREKT,— Secretary of the Auckland Harbour Board forwarded a resolution of the Board to the Council to the effect that the City Council be requested to name a sum for which the Council will form and take over the unfinished

portion of Quay-street. The city engineer, reporting in this connection, stated that it would be. necessary to take sections and prepare a plan before an estimate could be given, and asked that in the meantime the Council ascertain whether the Board wished a footway' formed on the north or water side of the street. Referred to the streets committee to report. o*fkr rk Rental.—Dr. King wrote, offering to rent the vacant allotment next the Wynyard Arms Hotel, in Wellesleystreet, for grazing his horses. The application was granted. Dividing Fence,—Mr. Edward Russell [.wrote, stating that he proposed to erect a fence between his property, in Jermynstreet, and that in which the City Council, with the Bank of Mew Zealand and Harbour Board were interested. The fence 'proposed would be of galvanised iron, with a wood coping, and he was anxious to know whether the Council would consent to a fence of that nature, The city engineer, in his report, said there would be no necessity for a coping, and stated that the Council's share of the expense of erection would be £4 13s. Referred to the streets committee.

FbusunoN of Footpath. — Messrs. Brown, Barrett, and Co., writing re the question of the completion of a footpath on trie reclaimed ground on the north side of Custom-street East, in which connection they recently approaohed the City Council with a viow to having the work done, and were then referred to the Harbour Board as the proper party, now stated that the Harbour Board had referred them back to the City Council as the responsible local body. They wore now, they said, between two " stools," bat stated that they would be quite willing to undertake the formation of a footpath on the condition that the Council refund the rates previously paid on their buildings and sections in CiHtom-street Ease, over which the Council disclaimed owner ihip, and that the Council cease to make any further demand for payment of rates over the valuations in question. Failing this, they would ask the Council to agree with the Harbour Board as to which was the body responsible for the maintenance and formation of works in the part of the street referred to. Referred to the legal committee, Ponsonbv Road Drainaoe.—Messrs. E. Mahoney anil Son wrote stating that they wore about to erect a block of shops in Ponsonby Road, near Anglesea-stieet, but finding that there was no sower, asked that the Council arrange for proper drainage for the proposed buildings. Iteferred to tho streets, committee. Alteration to Premises —Messrs. Mitchell and Watt, writing on behalf of Mr. R. H. Abbott, asked permission to make a slight alteration to that gentleman's premise? in Knrnngahape Bond, The proposed alteration consisted of the removal of a lean-to and the erection of a more suitable one-storey structure in its place.. The ap- | plication was granted. CoofJCir. Leasehold.— Mr. B.' Gilmer wrote asking that the house and allotment, which had been in his possession for 26 years past, the leaso of which expires on Augußt.ll,.ha. tendered Jm-.for a term .not. exceeding seven years. Pktttion rk Cab stand.— shopkeepers and property-owners in the vicinity of Queen mid U'etlesley streets petitioned the Council tor the removal of the cab-stand in that locality, on the grounds of the inconvenience and nuisance caused. Referred to the streets committee. MoitH Limit.—A petition for the erection of a lamp in Charlotte Terrace was received. Referred to the streets committee.
