THE TRADE OF LIVERPOOL. Op June 30 the Manchester Ship Canal was open for traffic three years and a-half; but despite the competition of the comparatively new port of Cottonopolis, th* " gentlemen" of Liverpool do not appear to have any the less shipping business to do. Indeed, statistics just issued show that it is the other way, and that trade generally is increasing at the Mersey port. It is stated that, so far this Jubilee year, the inward tonnage, eonvey?d by 1550 vessels, has been 2,863,481 tons, as compared with 1517 vessels and 2,279.224 tons during the corresponding period of 189& A similar increase is shown in the outward shipments, which from Jaiuary 1 to May 21 current represented 1245 vessels and 2,012,4.% tons, as against 1201 ships with 1,916,315 tens in the same period last year. The increase in exports from Liverpool for the five months (approximately) has been 97,121 tons, while increased imports amounted to 93,257 tans-figures which indicate not only the prosperity of Liverpool, but the general improvement in th« trade of the kingdom.
