THE NEW SAN FRANCISCO MAIL STEAMER. The Union Company's new mail iteamer Moana left Glasgow on the 10th instant, and is expected to arrive at Sydney on May 22. She will take up the Monowai's running from Sydney to Auckland and San Francisco on June 7. Regarding the trial trip of the iteamer it appears that under the oonditiom of contract she was to steam 16 knots on trial

with 1000 tons of dead weight on board, and to maintain 14 knot) at sea with 3000 tone of dead weight on a draft of 21'6. A very ample margin of boiler power wai provided to ensure this, and it was expected that there would be no difficulty in attaining 16} knots and 14} knots respectively. It appears, however, that the has done better than this, aa Cable advices received by the Union S.S. Company, state that the Moana averaged 17 knots on her light draft trials— is, with 1000 tons of dead weight, and 15} knots on a draft of 23 feet, which would be with over 3000 tons of dead weight on board.

THE AOTEA-ROUGH WEATHER. The auxiliary schooner Aotea arrived from Gisborne and East Coast porta yesterday. Captain Skinner reports leaving Gilborne on the evening of the 14th inst, the weather then '■elng fair. Upon the morning of the 15th, when off the False Gable, a very heavy sea was running, the wind blowing hard from N.N.E., with much rain and thick weather. The glass continuing to fall Captain Skinner deemed it prudent to return to Gisborne, and the vessel reached there on the evening of the 15th. There the vessel was weatherbound until the 20th, when auother start was made. The weather

during the detention in port was unusually I rough, much rain and wind, and also a heavy sea breaking in the harbour. The river Turaneanui, at Gisborne, was in continuous flood for days and shipping of any nature was entirely suspended. This gale was doubtless the same that visited Napier and the South with such disastrous results, The Aotea landed and received cargo at all her usual ports of call, and had fair weather round the East Cape and across the Bay of Plenty to arrival. Cargo: 216 sacks maize, 70 bags barley, 10 bags wheat, 15 bass and 'i bales wool, 26 cases jkumaras, 8 bags fungus, 35 cases bottles, and a large quantity of sundries.
