The morning paper congratulates the " masses" upon the result, although ft few of them have been " deluded" by the Opposition canvassers. There is the usual amount of gossip. The Success bf the Government Is attributed to the Permanent Artillery stationed at Fort Gordon and to the ketone workshops. The defeated side consoles itself with the fact that the majority given fur Mfi Wilfortl reduced to a half in the recent contest) Tile evening paper puts this vie* of the matter in the following term! I-"The defeat notwithstanding, there is tome reason ■ for gratulation among those who stand for the cause of a burfl democracy and honest Government. Thus Mr. Atkinson, notwithstanding the strenuous and desperate efforts of his opponents, and fighting as he did singlehanded, with every available Minister of the Crown on the stump against him, succeeded in reducing the majority of the Government .candidate- at the general election by nearly , one half. This is. a cheering sign, and tends to show that the day is ebbing when the mass of the people will cease to be swayed by shibboleth or will longer surrender to the tyranny Of the ticket,"
