FIRE AT NEWMARKET.

On Saturday morning about 2 o'clock a fire broke out in the residence of Mr. Day, Manukau Road, inspector of permanent way, Railway Department. Ho is at present away nt tho Kaiparu on a tour of inspection, and the house was occupied by Mr. J. \¥. Jones. Mr. Jones went to bod about 10 o'clock on the previous night, everything being apparently safe. He was awakened at tho hour abovo mentioned by feeling a sensation of choking, and gob up and opened the bedroom door to go into the corridor, but was driven back by tho smoke, tho kitchen being apparently on fire. He got out by the bedroom window and gave tho alarm. Tho local fire brigade arrived on the ground, uu', nothing was saved bub a few chairs, blankets, and part of a Duchess suite. The evening meal had been cooked at a gas stove, and the gas afterwards turned off, no fire being lit in tho fire place. Mr. Jono' is uilablo to account for the origin of the fire. The insurance could not be obtained owing to Mr. Day's absence from town, but ,it is believed the house was insured.
