H AMERICAN SHIPPING. Under date of March 26, Messrs, K. W. Forbes and Sorij of New York, report :—The tendency of freights by steam has been distinctly downward, owing to a decreased outward movement of grain, combined with an unusual supply of steamers, and berth rates to the Continent are lower than at any time since last August; but it is not expected that they will again reach the extraordinary low figures ruling last May. Sailing vessels are not in good supply, and in the main the advantage is on the side of the owners. This is particularly the case with small-sized carriers. For Australian business, however, the number of charters to arrive, some of which run as far forward as next August, has put the freight lines in a very comfortable position, so that thoy are not now anxious Didders. The barque Grace Peering sailed from New York for Auckland direct on March 11. Her cargo includes 12,050 cases of keroseno. The barque Golden Rod has been chartered to load at New York for Auckland direot.
