POLICE COURT.-Satdrday. (Before Mr. H. W. Brabant, S.M.) Drunkenness. — Samuel Given, James Troy, Margaret Wilkie, and Mary Ross were each fined 10s, with the alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment with hard labour. One first offender was punished in the usual way. Husband and -Annie Edwards brought an application for a separation order against her husband, John Edwards, under the Married Persons Act. Dr. Laishley appeared for the defendant. By consent of both parties the case was adjourned for hearing for a week. Destitute Persons Act.—A large number of maintenance cases appeared on the sheet, but only three orders were made. William Hoggard was charged with failing to comply with an order of the Court issued against him by Mr. Northcroft, S.M., for the support of his illegitimate child. Defendant did not appear, as he is at present in Wellington. The informant gave evidence. Defendant was convicted, and sentenced to two months' imprisonment in Wellington Gaol, with hard labour. John Place was charged with disobedience to a Court order, by which he was to pay 10j per week towards the maintenance of his wife, who is in the Costley Home. Mr. Strathern prosecuted and gave evidence. The Bench decided to adjourn the case for a fortnight, in order to see if the arrears would be paid. In default of payment of at least £2 of arrears the defendant will be imprisoned.
