KENNEL NOTES.

OUR DOGS. J§ [bx mabvel]. Is New Zealand, aud especially in the North il" the heat specimens are found in collies, foij] terriers, greyhounds, bull do>s, and poodlu. Amongst the former may be mentioned Mr.l; T. H. Bosworth's dog and bitch, Picton Great Scot and Pictou Frolic, both of which hn won first prizes in Sydney and Auckland, Mr. F. W. Edwards' Astonishment, Mt, Turkey's Selwyii Laddie, Mrs. Morpetb'iv/i Wonder of Wyoming, Mr. Pond's Lady Juns, V:] Mr. Roman's First Shot and Allan Break, ami'J Mr. ark's Rimu Rex. Mr. G. Reid has i very nice bitch puppy, but it is yet tooyoungV' to speak of with any certainly. The whole i of these are very good specimens, and mostr-i of them have abundance of coat, but gene-3 rally speaking the texture is too fine and 'jj silky, whereas it should be quite hard to the"' touch, especially the top coat. In fox terrier! *' Mr. G. R. Hutchinson has a real flyer in Heronwood Terror, and a good bitch ii Treason. Messrs. Shrewring, Hall, and lie-' Cabe, also own some good specimens. In the South we have some cracks, amongst uhici may be mentioned Dusky D'Orsay and Traitor,' In bull dogs we are very strong. Peter Jack-• son, Lady Jackson, Crib, and Smiler would hold their own in any colouial show; theys' are owned respectively by Messrs. Carter, Johnston, Grierson, and Stark. Mr. Penny- ; cook's Jeanie Deans, Mr. Barber's Black; Bess, and Donald Dinuie are very good sJ specimens of the greyhound, whilst Mr. A. ji' D. Robertson's poodles are quite first clan,- i Our St. Bernards are not even second rate, 'ji and this is very strange, considering thai ' there are such excellent dogs in Sydney and i Melbourne. We wonder someone does not iget some fresh blood in this favourite bleed, s Other very popular classes well worth importing would be Irish and Welsh terriers, . and Great Danes. A pure bred dog costs no £■ more to keep than a mongrel, and we would t advise every would-be owner to discard the ; latter. One has only to visit a good dog show to get some idea of the points of theiM different breeds, and judges as a rule will always answer any questions on the subject. Rough-coated collies still take precedence' , V of all (logs in public favour in England, at v' proved by the greatest numberof eutries being v I received for this breed at the principal shows, and big prices for good specimens art : \ quite the order of the day. £100 fori collie is quite a common occurrence, aud in, : several instances £1000 has been paid. Mr. J A. H. Megson, who quite recently paid £1003 ; for Southpoit Perfection, has just eclipsed' i this by paying £1200 and Egbaston Marvel' j for Ormskirk Emerald. The seller was Mr, T. H. Stretch, who almost immediately after' ward bad the misfortune to lose Marvel, who . strayed on to the railway line, and was killed by a train. . >
