HARBOUR BY-LAWS.
FAILING TO CARRY A RIDING LIGHT, At yesterday's sitting of the Police Court, presided over by Mr. H. W. Brabant, S.M., there was a charge on the sheet against one Joseph Allen (who did not appear), of having, on the night of March 22nd, then being master of the trading cutter Eleanor, anchored in the Auckland Harbour, failed to exhibit a' riding light in accordance with the Harbour Board Bylaws. Mr. McVeagh (Messrs. Russell and Campbell) appeared for the Harbour Board, and said the case was a serious one. On the night mentioned, the Eleanor was anchored off the Queen-street wharf, right in the fairway of the Nortbcote ferry-boats. Counsel said a collision very nearly occurred between the ferry-steamer Alexandra and the cutter through the latter having no light out. Evidence was given by Captain Duder, Harbourmaster, and Frank Nicholl, of the p.s. Alexandra, Mr. Brabant said it was strange the accused did nob appear, as it seemed to him (His Worship) a very serious offence. Accused was convicted, and fined £5 with eosts.
