THE MAYORALTY.
It will be seen that Mr. A. Uoardman has felt it his imperative duty to resign his office as Mayor of tl)6 City of Auckland, having held the office for only a few months. The reason for his resignation—his continued ill-health — will be deeply regretted, and the more so because the attack of illness was brought On by a chill caught while in the discharge of his duty, High hopes were entertained of the advantages which would accrue to the city from Mr. Boardman'a term of office. His time was entirely at liisown command, he had been for many years a resident of Auckland, and had made a study of its requirements ; and he had large general experience of business. However, all parties must bow to the inevitable. When Mr. Boardman became aware that his illness was not of a merely temporary kind, but was likely to prevent him from discharging his duties efficiently for some time, Tie determined to send in his resignation, and his action will commend itself to the citizens as the proper course in the circumstances. It now remains for the ratepayers to elect a successor. We need scarcely say that every citizen on the roll is eligible, The ratepayers are not restricted for I choice to the members of the City Council. The Mayor of _ Auckland occupies an important public position, which it ought to be the ambition of any citizen to fill. He has to preside on public occasions of importance and to receive visitors of distinction. Be is the executive of the Council, and he it is to whom we chiefly look for the efficient working of the city staff. The Mayor of the city is ex officio a member of several important bodies, and all our institutions are more or less under his care. With a good and efficient Mayor all things in Auckland work smoothly. We hope that a good selection will be made.
