MACQUARRIE ISLAND.
Prtss A.sHdciation.—Kluctrii: Toloßiriph.Copyrl»tlit. Hobart, April 16. A deputation waited on the Minister of Lands and protested against leasing Macquarrie Island to New Zealand. The main objection was that the inland was useful in connection with whaling. Proposals wore afoot for recuecitating the Tasmania!) whaling industry, and the success of the enterprise greatly depended on being able to use the island as a depot. The Minister said New Zealand's offer was made with no intention of interfering with Tasmania!) rights, but to prevent the island being used by poachers now swooping down from Campbell and other islands, and destroying seals out of season. The matter would remain in abeyance till tho return of his colleagues from the Federal Convention.
