EASTER CARNIVAL AT THE DRILL HALL.

For some time past an important Christian agency has been carried on in this Oity, styled the Church Mission to tho Streets and Lanes, and for several years the lady missionaries have resided in a cottage in Grey-street; but as they have had to seek temporary quarter? elsewhere, it is found necessary that steps should be taken at onco to procure, if possible, a small cottage, as a permanent home for the missioned, and accordingly, arrangements have been made to hold a great Easter Carnival, which is to be opened at the Drill Hall this evening by Mr. Holland, M.H.R, The carnival is to be on a most elaborate scale, and the arrangements are almost perfect. The hall presents a most beautiful oriental and floral spectacle. Variety of design and colour has been adopted rather than any set style of architecture. The Chinese pagoda in the centre of the building is exceedingly attractive and contains a rich stock of Chinese and Japanese ware. The flower dells and general stalls, fish ponds, and fairy grottos are all of new design and very pretty, The refreshment department of the carnival is to be a very special feature and every delicacy of the season, including oyster suppers, will be obtainable at strictly town prices. There is a smokers' parlour (which, no doubt, will be greatly appreciated by the sterner sex), phonographic and weighing bureau,. Punch and Judy, a cake guossing competition, and numerous other attractions. There is a splendid promenade right round the building, and a spacious platform is erected at the eastern hall, for tableaux vivants, Jarley's waxworks, and the musical programme to be given each evening. The carnival will be open to-night, also on tomorrow and Wednesday evenings from 7 to 10, and on Tuesday and Wednesday after? noons from 2.30 to 5.30. Apart from the commendable object of the carnival, such to attractive display can bardiy fail to draw large numbers to the Drill Hall during the Easter Holidays. ■ .">
